Diamond – Maintenance

Although diamond is considered the hardest, most brilliant minerals available, without proper and regular maintenance, it may become dull or appear less valuable.

Handling

It is always advised to pick up diamond jewelry by their bands or chains – never by the actual stone itself. This prevents the gems from having a buildup of natural oils and other residue transferred from the hands.

Exposure and Cleaning:

It’s essential to remember that there are a few elements that diamonds shouldn’t be exposed to. In terms of liquids, household chemicals, chlorine, hand and cosmetic lotions, hair-styling products, and other similar liquids should be avoided at all costs.

As with many other varieties of gemstone, diamond does collect a significant amount oil, dirt and makeup from everyday use. A good rule to remember for keeping your stone in mint condition is to handle it as little as possible while completing routine tasks, such as applying makeup, spraying hairspray or perfume, washing your face, etc. Something to think about is: “Last in, first out.” Additionally, it’s best to perform routine cleaning at home using these four easy steps:

1. Remove any noticeable dirt or debris from between metal prongs by using a toothpick. Tiny cloth fibers may also be removed carefully with tweezers.

2. Mix ¼ cup of baking soda with two tablespoons of water and lightly apply to jewelry. To disintegrate buildup, scrub gently with a sponge until its transparency is more apparent. You may also use a small amount of vinegar for extra cleansing. For stones with oil or grime, you may use a simple water and dish soap solution to use on the stone. For an intense cleaning to renew the gem’s brilliance, apply an ammonia solution (one part ammonia, three parts water) in a well-ventilated room with rubber gloves – the diamond should not be exposed to the solution for more than 10 minutes. If none of the listed products are readily available, you may use a small amount of vodka to let the stone soak in.

3. After lightly scrubbing in the solution of your choice, rinse thoroughly with room-temperature distilled water. Using distilled water ensures any impurities that could leave behind residue, including mineral deposits, are completely removed.

4. Take a soft, lint-free cloth, and lightly rub off any remaining water droplets. Allowing the stones to air dry may leave behind water spots, so be sure to dry the entire surface area before wearing.

To ensure an even more brilliant appearance, visit a certified jeweler once or twice a year to have your gem examined and professionally polished. In addition to cleaning, the jeweler will also check the mounting and setting to secure that the stones have not been altered from their original placement.

Storing

Because diamond is so strong in mineral hardness, it is important to protect your jewelry carefully, so as to not scratch or chip any pieces. Even diamond has the ability to scratch the surface of another diamond, so properly storing each piece in compartmentalized boxes or containers is essential.

Repairing

While diamonds are certainly hard gemstones, they are not entirely indestructible. Should your stone should need a repair, taking the stone to a professional is highly recommended. Because the mineral hardness is so strong, this person will have the best judgment for the type of repairing methods to use on this gem.
