How Gems Are Cut
The Cutting process explained
Follow the Gem As It Transforms
Gem material mined from the earth. Rough is uncut un-shaped natural gemstones or crystals, usually without excess rock and ore.
The basic shape of the gem. Creating preform is a process done by sawing or using coarse abrasives to grind the gem into a workable shape.
The gem in a more refined shape. Cutter prepare the gem for faceting by attaching it to dop stick with wax. The gem is them shaped with a higher abrasive.
The gem with the basic faceting pattern. The facets are defined, but not perfect. There is extra material on the gem so cutters can polish it with precision.
A finished gem. Cutters use a higher abrasive to slowly smooth the surface. All facets are polished with the edges meeting to form proper corners.
How We Cut Our Gems
A specialist will divide rough into groups based on its shape, size, and inclusions. He determines what cuts the rough will become to maximize yield.
Not every section of the rough is usable. Cutters will remove large portions of rough that have inclusions or color zoning with pliers or a circular saw.
The cutter forms the basic profile of the gem by pressing the rough against a lap with low grade abrasive to gently grind the gem into shape.
Preforms are attached to a brass dop stick with hot wax so that cutters can facet and polish the gem with greater accuracy and control.
Cutters form the facets one at a time by securing the end of the dop in the tang and pressing the gem gently against the lap.
After the crown and pavilion are faceted, cutters go back and use a high grit diamond abrasive to polish every facet.
Cutters complete the gem by polishing the girdle and giving it either one continuous surface or multiple facets.
How We maintain our quality standards
Each Stage of Inspection
Even though we acquire quality rough, inspectors still examine the material before we invest our time in cutting a gem.
Inspectors examine each piece of preform to check the shape and ensure there is enough material to facet the gem.
Another inspector measures the dimensions of preforms to maintain our strict size standards.
After faceting, inspectors note the symmetry and proportions of the facets. They reject any gems outside our tolerance.
Inspectors examine all surfaces for polish marks or chips. Any imperfections are sent back to the lapidaries and corrected.
The workshop supervisor inspects each gem after faceting and polishing. Gems cannot continue without his approval.
Two separate inspectors examine each gem for brilliance and clarity as the final step in our quality control.
